Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Denver’s history, stands the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith and resilience of Slovenian and Croatian immigrants. Let’s journey back to the early 1900s, a time when Globeville, Denver, was a melting pot of cultures. Holy Rosary Catholic Church wasn’t here yet. Slovenian and Croatian immigrants, seeking refuge and opportunity, found themselves in this bustling industrial hub. They yearned for a spiritual home, a place where they could hear Mass and confess their sins in their native tongues. Their initial attempts to establish a church were met with resistance from Bishop Nicholas Matz. He urged them to attend the nearby St. Joseph’s Polish Church. This wasn’t ideal. The language barrier proved too great. Many stopped attending Mass altogether. Others clung to their faith. They saved their meager earnings, patiently waiting for the day they could build their own church. A glimmer of hope appeared with the arrival of a new bishop, J. Henry Tihen. In 1918, he granted permission for the formation of Holy Rosary Parish. Years of scrimping and saving culminated in a groundbreaking ceremony in 1919. Holy Rosary Catholic Church rose from the ground, a beacon of hope for the community. The dedication ceremony, held on July 4, 1920, was a spectacle. Bishop Tihen, leading a procession from St. Joseph’s Polish Church, praised the parishioners. He reminded them that it was the poor, not princes, who built the grand cathedrals of Europe. The church quickly became the heart of the Slovenian and Croatian community. Father Cyril Zupan, traveling from Pueblo, initially served the parish. Later, Father John J. Judnic became the resident pastor. A school and convent were added in the 1920s. This solidified Holy Rosary’s role as a center for education and faith. Holy Rosary Catholic Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a social hub, a place where traditions were preserved. The church hosted plays, concerts, and dances. It fostered a strong sense of community. Over the years, Holy Rosary Catholic Church weathered many storms. The Great Depression, World War II, and the construction of interstates that divided the neighborhood. Through it all, the church remained a constant, a source of strength. Today, Holy Rosary Catholic Church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders. It continues to serve a diverse community. The echoes of Slovenian and Croatian hymns may be fainter now. But the spirit of faith and resilience lives on, woven into the very fabric of this historic church.
