In 1991 a new chapter began for a historic diocese. This is the Diocese of Alcalá de Henares. Today we will explore its origins and its place in the Catholic Church of Spain.
The Diocese of Alcalá de Henares holds a significant place in Spanish religious history. Its story is one of ancient roots and modern restoration. The diocese we see today was officially established on July 23 1991. Pope John Paul II signed the decree. This act revived a religious structure with origins stretching back centuries.
To understand the present we must journey back to the past. The original Diocese of Complutum existed in the 4th and 5th centuries. Complutum is the old Roman name for Alcalá de Henares. However this early diocese was lost during the period of Muslim rule. The Christian Kings did not restore it. Its territory became part of the Archdiocese of Toledo.
Centuries later in 1885 a new arrangement emerged. The Diocese of Madrid and Alcala was founded. It was a suffragan meaning it was under the authority of Toledo. This entity evolved into what we now know as the Archdiocese of Madrid.
The year 1991 marked a turning point. The Diocese of Alcalá de Henares was reborn from the Archdiocese of Madrid. It became a suffragan diocese. The name Complutensis was chosen as its Latin name. This was to honor the ancient diocese.
The Diocese of Alcalá de Henares covers a large area. It spans 2583 square kilometers. This includes 54 municipalities east of Madrid. Within this area are many Catholic faithful. They practice their faith in various churches and parishes. The most populated area is within Madrid’s metropolitan zone.
At the heart of the Diocese of Alcalá de Henares is its leadership. The bishop guides the faithful. Antonio Prieto Lucena is the current bishop. He took office on April 1 2023. Before him Juan Antonio Reig Pla served from 2009 to 2022.
The main church of the diocese is the Cathedral of Saints Justus and Pastor. It is in Alcalá de Henares. This cathedral holds a special distinction. Along with the Church of San Pedro in Leuven Belgium it is a Magistral church. The cathedral is also a World Heritage Site. The bishop lives in the Archbishop’s Palace of Alcalá de Henares.
The Diocese of Alcalá de Henares has 93 parishes. These parishes are organized into 10 archpriests. These districts help manage the pastoral work of the church.
The diocese supports those who want to become priests. It has two seminaries. The Seminario Mayor de la Inmaculada y los Santos Justo y Pastor was founded in 1997. The Seminario Menor Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is also important.
Interestingly the Diocese of Alcalá de Henares has a pop-rock band. It is called The Voice of the Desert. The band includes three priests and four laymen. Since 2004 they have performed in Spain the United States and Panama. They even played at World Youth Day events.
Each year the Diocese of Alcalá de Henares celebrates its patron saints. The Saints Children Justus and Pastor are honored on August 6. There is a special Mass and a procession through Alcalá de Henares.
The Diocese of Alcalá de Henares continues to evolve. It embraces both tradition and modern expression. Its history is a testament to faith. It serves its community through worship education and music.
