How about a prefabricated dream, materialized right here in Staten Island? This is The Crimson Beech. It is the only house in New York City designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. That makes it pretty special.

The Crimson Beech stands at 48 Manor Court. It is a testament to Wright’s vision of affordable, beautiful homes for the American middle class. This wasn’t about grand museums or towering skyscrapers. It was about bringing good design to everyday life.

Let’s step back to the late 1950s. Wright, already a legend, sought to make his designs accessible. He partnered with Marshall Erdman to create prefabricated houses. These were meant to be easy to construct and budget-friendly. The Crimson Beech is one of eleven Marshall Erdman Prefab Houses ever built.

William and Catherine Cass, the original owners, commissioned this home. They saw Wright on a television interview. Inspired, they chose the Prefab #1 model. The house was manufactured in Madison, Wisconsin. Then, it was shipped to Staten Island. The cost in 1959? About $55,000 for everything. That included the components and the assembly.

Notice the L-shape design. It is a signature of the Prefab #1 model. The wide hip roofs emphasize the horizontal lines. The exterior blends red brick with cream-colored Masonite. Redwood battens add further detail.

The Crimson Beech got its name from a copper beech tree. It was several hundred years old and stood proudly in the front yard. Sadly, a hurricane took it down ten years later. A new beech tree was planted as a memory.

Inside, The Crimson Beech features Philippine mahogany walls. Look for the raised horizontal bands. The house has a combined kitchen and family room. The sunken living room boasts a cathedral ceiling. A gallery connects to the four bedrooms. The sloping site gives the rear of the house two stories. This is despite the front appearing as a single story.

The Crimson Beech is more than just a house. It is a piece of architectural history. It showcases Wright’s Usonian principles. These principles emphasize simplicity, natural materials, and connection to the landscape.

In August 1990, The Crimson Beech became a New York City Landmark. The Cass family lived here until 1999. Today, it remains privately owned. It is a reminder of Wright’s commitment to accessible design. The Crimson Beech stands as a unique gem. It is a testament to architectural innovation. It is a piece of Frank Lloyd Wright’s legacy.
