Ever wondered what it takes for a park to rise from the dust of a metro construction site? Thiru Vi Ka Park is more than just a green space. It is a story of resilience. This urban park also known as Shenoy Nagar Park stands in the heart of Chennai.
Originally spanning 8.8 acres Thiru Vi Ka Park was home to about 300 trees. In 2007 the Chennai Corporation invested ₹64 lakhs to develop it. Statues of leaders were installed and the park opened to the public in 2008.
However, in 2011, the park faced a major setback. It closed for the construction of the Chennai Metro Rail. Around 242 trees were cut down. 56 were moved. The park seemed lost.
Residents protested for their beloved green space. Even a Madras High Court judge inspected the site. The park remained closed long after the metro work finished in May 2017. Hope flickered when a ₹4 crore renovation was announced. Delays continued.
Finally, on April 4, 2023, Thiru Vi Ka Park reopened. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin inaugurated it. The total renovation cost reached ₹18 crores. Today the park boasts many facilities. A walking track invites you to stroll. A skating rink calls to skaters. There is also a beach volleyball court, a basketball court, and a cricket net practice space. For fitness enthusiasts, an open gym and yoga center await. Bookworms can enjoy the reading zone.
The park’s maintenance is now in the hands of a private firm Quess Corp Limited since November 28 2023. Though many saplings have been planted through the Miyawaki method, some remember the old days. Subhashini Rao a 74-year-old resident recalls a green forest filled with birds.
Despite some drawbacks, Thiru Vi Ka Park is clean and well-maintained. A large sign lists all the facilities. Pathways are wide and saplings are labeled. Evenings come alive with badminton games and skaters showing off their skills. The musical fountain adds a touch of magic.
Thiru Vi Ka Park offers more than just physical space. It is a place to meet people. It is a place to catch up with friends. It is even a place to make new friends. So take a moment to appreciate this revitalized space. It is a true community asset.
