Welcome to the Apostelkirche. It is a landmark with a rich history. This church has witnessed centuries of change. It began as a monastery church. Later, it became a Prussian garrison church. Today, it serves the Protestant community.

The Apostelkirche’s story began in the late 13th century. The Franciscans built it as their monastery church. They arrived in Muenster around 1247. By 1284, they had completed the main nave, choir, and southern aisle. Bishop Gerhard von der Mark supported them. Initially, the church was dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria.

The church’s history is intertwined with Muenster’s pivotal events. It survived the Muenster Stiftsfehde. It also endured the Reformation. In 1517, the church became the monastery church for the Minorites. Despite conflicts and plunder, the church persevered. Restorations followed periods of turmoil.

The Apostelkirche showcases Gothic architectural brilliance. Originally, it had two aisles. It evolved into a three-aisled hall church. The narrow choir ends in a 5/8 closure. This design reflects the mendicant orders’ simplicity and elegance. The north aisle and western bays were added in the 17th century. This made it the oldest purely Gothic church in Westphalia.

Look up. Notice the roof rider. It sits atop the nave’s eastern end. It houses the church bells. The facade features pointed arches and intricate stonework. Medieval masons brought this structure to life.

Inside, the Apostelkirche inspires awe. Simple Goethe glass fills the windows. Natural light floods the space. This minimalist approach highlights the Gothic hall’s features. The atmosphere is serene and contemplative.

Don’t miss the late medieval vault paintings. They add historical depth to the interior. A striking crucifix is present. Also see Heinrich Gerhard Buecker’s unique artwork. It symbolizes creation and the divine spirit.

After secularization in 1811, the church was deconsecrated. In 1822, Karl Friedrich Schinkel restored it. It became a Protestant church for the Prussian military.

The Apostelkirche suffered damage during World War II. The community was dedicated to its restoration. By 1949, the church was rededicated. Reconstruction finished by 1960. Congregations from the Isle of Wight assisted.

The Apostelkirche has a rich musical history. Organ music dates back to 1821. Today’s organ was built in 1968. Paul Ott’s company created it. It has 36 registers and a Zimbelstern. It enhances the church’s musical life.
