Is it possible that the Calvary Church of the Nazarene started with a small group of believers? In 1934 a small group gathered on Buchanan Street in Memphis. By 1937 this group moved to Jackson Avenue. Calvary Church was officially organized as a congregation then.
Let’s delve into the story of Calvary Church of the Nazarene. This growing group moved again in 1973. They found a new location on Stage Road. The church continued to grow and serve its community.
Easter Sunday 2001 marked another pivotal moment for Calvary Church. They moved to their current home on Houston Levee Road in Cordova. Cordova was a thriving community offering much opportunity. The church was intent on reflecting God’s diversity. It was committed to modeling reconciliation in its new location.
Calvary Church’s mission is clear. Love. Serve. Multiply. These three words guide their actions and outreach. They strive to embody these principles in all they do. The church aims to spread love serve others and multiply their impact.
The beliefs of Calvary Church of the Nazarene are deeply rooted. They believe in one God Father Son and Holy Spirit. The Bible is their reliable authority. It guides them in matters of faith and Christian living. They see it as God’s saving message.

Calvary Church of the Nazarene believes in an eternal future. This future fulfills God’s creative purpose. It also holds all people accountable for their choices.
In 2011 Calvary Pictures produced a major motion picture. This ministry of Calvary Church partnered with Provident Films and GraceWorks Pictures. The Grace Card told a Memphis story. It showed how God overcomes racial prejudice. It became their story.
In 2015 they acquired 11 acres adjacent to the church. This created a 38 acre campus. This purchase launched the Houston Levee Community Center. The HLCC ministers to the community. It offers before school care seminars and a parish nurse program. English as a Second Language classes are available. HOA meetings and sports events also happen there. The HLCC serves all ages. It is a place for the community to come together.
Another movie followed in 2017. Calvary Pictures GraceWorks Pictures and Provident Films produced Indivisible. This film told the true story of Army Chaplain Darren Turner and his wife Heather. They fought to save their marriage. Indivisible communicated reconciliation around the world.
Houston Levee Cowboy Church began in 2022. It meets on Sunday afternoons at the HLCC. Its vision is to equip individuals to be devoted followers of Christ. This happens within the cowboy culture. Circle C Arena was built behind Calvary Church. It hosts equine activities rodeos and campfire gatherings. Fellowship follows Cowboy Church services.
Calvary Church welcomes all. They desire to serve families. They hope visitors discover God’s love. People at Calvary also offer love service and multiplication. It is a place to belong and grow in faith.
