Remembering a bygone era. That is what we are doing today visiting the former Coleman University. This private institution focused on information technology. It operated right here in San Diego from 1963 to 2018. Coleman University’s story is one of innovation and adaptation.

Coleman Furr founded the university. His vision was to train students in electronic data processing. The university was originally named Automation Institute of San Diego. This was in 1963. In 1969 it was renamed Coleman College. Coleman became a non-profit educational institute in 1972.

Coleman University adapted to the changing needs of the tech industry. In 1979, the Department of Computer Technology was created. This led to certificates and degrees in computer electronics technology. A Master of Science degree in Information Systems followed in 1982. The university opened a San Marcos campus in 1986. It served the growing population in northern San Diego County.

Coleman continued to evolve its programs. An interdisciplinary program in computer applications and networks came in 1994. The Computer Applications and Networks Department replaced Office Automation Systems in 1996. The Computer Electronics Technology program was renamed Computer Engineering Technology. It eventually became Computer Network Technology. In 2002, Coleman launched a Computer Graphic Design program. A Master of Science degree program in Business and Technology Management was introduced in 2003.

The transition to Coleman University was announced in 2008. This happened during the college’s 45th-anniversary celebration. Coleman introduced a Master of Business Administration program in 2009. A Master of Business Administration In Health Care Management program came in 2012.

Coleman University faced challenges that led to its closure. The San Marcos branch campus closed in 2013. The Graphic Design Program ended in 2017. Coleman University closed its doors on August 6, 2018.

Coleman University played a vital role in San Diego’s tech community. It educated many business-technology professionals over the years. The university’s motto was “Dreams Into Reality”. It reflected Coleman’s dedication to student success. Coleman University was accredited. It was authorized by the State of California to award accredited degrees. The university was also approved for veteran training.

Coleman struggled with declining enrollment. It faced competition from larger public universities. The loss of accreditation also contributed to its closure. Today, Coleman University’s legacy lives on through its alumni. They have made significant contributions to the field of information technology. The university’s impact on San Diego’s tech industry remains undeniable.
