The bell tolls. Its resonant chime echoes a story spanning over a century. This is Englewood United Methodist Church. Right here on this very spot stood a much smaller structure. It began in 1888. A humble gathering of twelve souls. They signed a charter in the Peffley family’s dining room. This marked the birth of Englewood United Methodist Church or rather its predecessor. The first services were held in John Nill Hall.
Englewood United Methodist Church was not always this grand building. It started small. Think of it a tiny seed of faith. This seed took root in the then Harrisburg. Christian Herr generously donated land. He provided building materials too. The church was built on Walnut and Herr Streets. It was dedicated in 1889.
Seminary students from Bonebrake Seminary cycled or took the train from Dayton. They served as pastors. They stayed with local families. This unique arrangement forged a strong bond between the church and the seminary. Englewood United Methodist Church became a teaching church. It has maintained this relationship for many years.
The church wasn’t static. It grew and adapted. In 1915 renovations began. Heating and lighting were added. A basement was built. The United Brethren Church merged with the Evangelical Church in 1944. An education unit was completed in 1956. The current sanctuary with its iconic stained glass window was dedicated in 1967. Finally in 1968 the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged. The name became Englewood United Methodist Church as we know it today.
The original church building was sadly demolished in 1974. But the bell remains. You can find it near the Walnut Street entrance. A reminder of the church’s humble beginnings. The sanctuary was remodeled in 2003. It now offers greater visibility. Reverend George L Sidwell served as pastor for eighteen years. The longest tenure in the church’s history. Norman Moxley is the current pastor.
Englewood United Methodist Church has a rich and evolving history. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith. A community that has adapted grown and thrived for over 130 years.
