A relic’s journey. That’s what the story of Agia Varvara is all about. We stand before the Holy Shrine of Saint Barbara a place steeped in history and miracle.
Agia Varvara is more than just a suburban town. It’s a place where faith and history intertwine. The current church building dates back to 1904. Its design a beautiful three-naved basilica. The central nave honors Saint Barbara. Other chapels inside are dedicated to Saint Phanuorios and Saint Mavra.
But the story goes much deeper than the 1904 structure. Legend whispers of a church here for over a thousand years. Almost as old as the nearby Daphni Monastery. An older monastery may have existed on this very spot. This older building was eventually lost. It was buried under earth and stones. It was even used as a sheep pen.
The discovery of the miraculous icon of Saint Barbara is the most astonishing part of Agia Varvara’s tale. A shepherd dreamt of a young woman. She warned him to stop desecrating her sacred place. He ignored her. He then started losing sheep each day. The young woman reappeared. She instructed him to have the ground dug. Two women followed her instructions. They unearthed the miraculous icon.
This 37 x 26 cm icon is now a cherished relic. News of its discovery spread. The faithful flocked to Agia Varvara seeking Saint Barbara’s blessings. Countless miracles are attributed to her. Numerous dedications and offerings are still left there daily.
The story takes another unexpected turn. A part of Saint Barbara’s remains arrived in Agia Varvara in 2003. These holy relics were brought from Venice Italy. This transfer happened after a request from the Greek Church. The relics now rest permanently in the shrine.
The shrine itself is under the care of the Apostoliki Diakonia of the Church of Greece. This care has been in place since 1949. Proceeds from the shrine help various missionary and social causes. This continues the legacy of Saint Barbara. Her story of faith and healing lives on in Agia Varvara. This is a place where miracles are not just legends. They are part of the living faith of the people.
