In 1962, a bold new structure arose on the west side of the Cam, challenging Cambridge’s traditional architecture. This was Harvey Court, a student residence for Gonville and Caius College. Designed by Sir Leslie Martin’s office, with contributions from Colin St. John Wilson and Patrick Hodgkinson, Harvey Court was a modern reinterpretation of the classic Cambridge quadrangle. The main courtyard, paved rather than grassed, sits above ground level. It’s surrounded on three sides by student rooms, echoing the traditional layout. The fourth side opens onto a spacious garden, a departure from the enclosed courtyards of old. Harvey Court’s namesake, William Harvey, a seventeenth-century fellow of Gonville and Caius, would likely be intrigued by this modern homage to collegiate life. The building’s design is a fascinating blend of brutalist and elegant elements. From West Road, Harvey Court appears imposing, a concrete and brick behemoth. Yet, the inner courtyard reveals a softer side, full of light and air thanks to the stepped terraces. These terraces, unique to each room, provide private outdoor spaces overlooking the courtyard. The generous windows offer views of the courtyard’s minimalist design. The initial design included around 100 student rooms, each without an ensuite bathroom. This was later updated in a £7.5 million refurbishment completed in 2011 by Levitt Bernstein architects. The renovation modernized the rooms with ensuite bathrooms and improved accessibility, while also restoring the building’s fabric and adding solar panels. This ensured Harvey Court remains a vibrant part of Cambridge life, a testament to its architectural significance and enduring practicality. This refurbishment also addressed the long-standing issue of leaking terraces and podium roof, a problem since the building’s original construction. The restoration also involved carefully matching replacement brick pavers to the originals to maintain the courtyard’s original aesthetic. Today, Harvey Court stands as a Grade II* listed building, protected by law and appreciated for its unique blend of brutalist and elegant design. It’s a place where history and modernity meet, offering a distinctive living experience for the students of Gonville and Caius College.
