How did a simple storm transform the landscape? The Kiebitzbrack in Hamburg stands before you a testament to nature’s raw power.

This brackish water body in the Vierlanden region is more than just a pretty sight. It’s a living historical record. Kiebitzbrack’s name itself is a clue. It refers to a house on its western edge once marked ‘Kiebitz’ on old maps. The 18th century also saw it called Elbdammsbrack.

Kiebitzbrack formed sometime around the 17th century. A powerful storm surge likely carved this 3.7-hectare haven. It’s the source of the Gose-Elbe-Graben a canal that flows into the Gose Elbe. Ultimately it joins the Dove Elbe at the Die Reit nature reserve. The Kiebitzbrack is up to 8 meters deep and measures approximately 390 meters long. It’s maximum width is 290 meters.

Imagine the force of the water shaping this landscape. The creation of Kiebitzbrack was violent. It left a lasting impression on the Vierlanden. Today the Kiebitzbrack is a vital part of the larger Kiebitzbrack nature reserve. This reserve also boasts four other smaller bracks. These are connected to Kiebitzbrack through a system of waterways.

The reserve is a rich habitat. It’s home to diverse flora and fauna. Rare birds nest in its reed beds. The fish community is particularly fascinating. The rare stone loach lives in its depths. This protected species is a treasure of the Kiebitzbrack. The Schlammpeitzger another rare fish also calls this place home. Its unique ability to breathe air through its gut makes it perfectly adapted to this environment.

The Kiebitzbrack is a hidden gem. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. It’s a reminder of the power of storms and the resilience of life. This brackish water body is far more than just water. It represents the dynamic relationship between humankind and nature. So take a moment soak in the atmosphere and appreciate the history held within the calm waters of the Kiebitzbrack.
