Sonipat’s historical roots connect it to the Mahabharata. Legend says it was one of five villages demanded by the Pandavas. They sought peace with Duryodhana. These villages were the price for Hastinapur. The other four were Indraprastha, Tilaprastha, Vyaghraprastha and Panduprastha.
The name Sonipat evolved over time. Swarnprastha meaning Golden City transformed. It became Swarnpath then finally Sonipat. This evolution mirrors the city’s changing fortunes.
The Ain-i-Akbari mentions Sonipat during the Mughal era. It describes a pargana under the Delhi sarkar. The area produced revenue and maintained a military force. A brick fort stood ruled by Jats.
Principalities of Jat Chaudharys shaped Sonipat’s local dynamics. The Dahiya Jats established Kharkhoda. They ruled over 52 villages in Sonipat. Malik Jat Chaudharys founded Ahulana. They collected taxes during the Mughal period and resisted British rule in 1857. The royal lineage of Raja Madanpal headed Kashthanagar. They ruled the Rai tehsil region.
Islamic rule came to Sonipat after 1193. Banda Singh Bahadur led the Sikhs in battle here in 1709. They fought the Mughals. Khanda village witnessed the Battle of Sonipat. Banda Singh Bahadur’s military leadership secured victory.
Geographically Sonipat lies on the Haryana-Punjab plain. The Yamuna River forms its eastern boundary. This river creates a narrow flood plain. The soil is mostly fine loam ideal for agriculture.
Sonipat’s climate features hot summers and cold winters. The monsoon season brings relief from the heat. However humidity remains high during this time. Thunderstorms and dust storms frequently occur before the monsoon.
Sonipat is divided into four sub-divisions. These are Ganaur, Sonipat, Kharkhoda and Gohana. Eight blocks constitute the district. Sonipat is the largest tehsil followed by Gohana.
