In 1885, a small seed of faith was planted in Seoul. This seed blossomed into the Chungdong First Methodist Church. It stands before you as a testament to the enduring power of belief. Chungdong First Methodist Church, often called “Korea’s Mother Church”, holds the distinction of being the first Methodist church in Korea. It is also one of Korea’s oldest Protestant churches. The story of Chungdong First Methodist Church begins with American missionary, Henry Appenzeller. He arrived in Korea in 1885. He initially held services in a traditional Korean house, a hanok. He affectionately named it “Bethel Chapel”. As the congregation grew, the need for a larger space became evident. In 1895, construction began on the church you see today. The dedication service for the new Bethel Chapel took place on December 26, 1897. Chungdong First Methodist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It played a pivotal role in Korea’s history. It became a hub for several early publications. These included Korea’s first private newspaper, the Tongnip Sinmun, and the first Christian newspaper in Korea, The Korean Christian Advocate. The church even housed Korea’s first privately owned printing press. This further solidified its role in disseminating information and shaping public discourse. The church’s architecture is a simple yet elegant example of American Gothic style. Look up and notice the arched window frames. This design element contributes to the church’s timeless appeal. In 1977, Bethel Chapel was recognized for its historical significance. It was designated Historic Site of South Korea No. 277. Chungdong First Methodist Church continues to serve as a vibrant center of faith. It offers services in both Korean and English. For those interested in delving deeper into the church’s rich history, the Mangon Christian History Reference Room houses a wealth of historical materials. A history museum was added in 2023. This provides an even more immersive experience for visitors. Chungdong First Methodist Church stands as a symbol of resilience. It represents the intertwining of faith, history, and cultural exchange in the heart of Seoul.
