Originally named Augusta in 1796, this town in New York State found itself needing a new moniker. Another location already bore the name Augusta. So, in 1808, it adopted the name Middlesex.
Middlesex became part of Yates County in 1823. This happened when Yates County was formed. Before that, it was a part of Ontario County. The Town of Potter was created from part of Middlesex in 1832. More of Middlesex was added to Potter in 1856.
Early settlers made their mark here around 1789. The Seneca tribe has a legend about a village called Nundawao. They believed they originated there near Canandaigua Lake.
Middlesex covers a total area of 34.1 square miles. Land makes up 30.9 square miles of that area. Water covers 3.2 square miles. Canandaigua Lake defines the western side of the town. Middlesex sits in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
In 1824, Selden Williams represented Middlesex at the Board of Supervisors in Yates County. He declared that the town was so poor that only eagles and angels could live there. Middlesex has beautiful hills and valleys with productive farms today.
The hamlet of Middlesex sits at the junction of NY-245 and NY-364. It is near the center of the town. West River flows past this community. Other communities include Pine Corners and Valley View.
The origin place of the Seneca nation is a subject of debate. Nundawao South Hill and Genundowa Bare Hill are both contenders. Both sites are in Middlesex. They both border Canandaigua Lake.
