The Masjid Sultan Mahmud Riayatsyah boasts the largest dome in all of Indonesia a testament to its grandeur. It is also the largest mosque in Batam and Sumatra. It was the brainchild of Batam’s mayor Muhammad Rudi. The first stone was laid in April 2017. The mosque was finally inaugurated on September 20 2019. The entire project cost around 400 million rupiah.
The architecture is a stunning blend of Malay and Arab styles. Known as Masjid Agung II the mosque’s predominantly white color evokes serenity. The design is captivating. The 99-meter-high minaret dominates the skyline. Step inside the courtyard and you’ll be greeted by eight impressive membrane umbrellas. These 17-meter-tall umbrellas are strikingly similar to those at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. At night they glow with colorful lights.
The mosque’s sheer scale is impressive. Its total floor area covers 57114 square meters. It sits on a vast plot of land over 4 hectares. This massive space allows the Masjid Sultan Mahmud Riayatsyah to accommodate up to 25000 worshippers. It’s more than just a mosque. It is a community hub.
The story behind its construction is fascinating. Mayor Rudi’s inspiration stemmed from witnessing shipyard workers rushing away from Friday prayers. He wanted to create a mosque easily accessible to them. After years of planning the groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2017. The completion of this mosque is a testament to community spirit and faith. Today the Masjid Sultan Mahmud Riayatsyah stands tall.
