A timber parish church stood in the heart of Rathfarnham in 1212. Later, a stone church was built on the same site, and its ruins remain today, just north of the present church on Main Street. It was a simple wooden structure at first. The parish of Rathfarnham is dedicated to Saint Mary. The church has been witness to centuries of history and religious devotion. The original church, a humble timber structure, was replaced with a stone church some time after 1212. This stone church, now in ruins, stands as a reminder of the parish’s long history and its enduring faith. The present church, the third on this site, was built in 1789. This elegant building, with its two transepts, is a testament to the growth of the parish and its vibrant community. It has beautiful stained glass windows that tell stories of saints and scripture.
