Katharinenkirche began without a name. For 93 years, it was simply called “Evangelische Kirche Bovinghausen”. In 2009 new windows were installed in the Katharinenkirche. The artist Anna Pauli designed them. You can download a brochure about the windows as a PDF.
The church finally received its name. It was named after Katharina von Bora. She was a former nun. She was also the brave wife of Martin Luther. The reformer’s wife is now the namesake of Katharinenkirche. The road through the town is the B235. Katharinenkirche is at the intersection with Bovinghauser Street.
The Evangelical Church was founded in 1911. Bovinghausen belonged to Lutgendortmund and Castrop parishes before that. The Zollern I shaft brought many people to this area. This made a new parish necessary. Karl Ufer founded the church building association in 1908. He was the mine manager. He later became the church’s master builder.
Kaiserin Auguste Victoria donated an altar bible. She donated it for the church’s dedication. This bible is now on loan. You can see it at the LWL-Industriemuseum Zeche Zollern. It will soon be on display there. In 1914, the foundation stone was laid for Katharinenkirche. The anniversary celebrations started on Pentecost.
Katharinenkirche celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015. The celebrations began on the day of its dedication September 5th. The community had a big party. There was coffee and cake. There were games for everyone. There was even a nostalgic carousel for the little ones. Trumpets and bells announced a special service. Landeskirchenrat Professor Dr. Dieter Beese led the service.
The hymns at the anniversary service were the same from 100 years ago. After the service, the community enjoyed food and drinks. There was salt cake, lard bread, and Pfefferpotthast. There were greetings, gifts, and music. The gospel choir “Spirit of Harmony” performed. The day ended with singing and blessings in the church.
