In 1910 Woodmere almost became a village. It didn’t quite happen then. This hamlet in Nassau County New York is part of a unique community. It’s one of the Five Towns. These towns include Lawrence and Cedarhurst. Inwood and Woodmere are also hamlets in this area. Hewlett Bay Park Hewlett Harbor Hewlett Neck and Woodsburgh make up The Hewletts. Hewlett is also an unincorporated hamlet.
Woodmere’s story is interwoven with the fabric of Long Island. It’s a place where history and modern life blend seamlessly. Its residents have seen attempts at incorporation fail. This happened not once but twice. The first attempt was in 1910 the second in 1978. Woodmere remains a hamlet. It’s governed by the Town of Hempstead.
Woodmere boasts a diverse population. The 2010 census showed a population of 17121. The racial makeup was predominantly White. A significant portion of the population is Modern Orthodox Jewish. This has led to the establishment of multiple synagogues within Woodmere and its neighboring areas. The Five Towns community itself is notable for its strong Modern Orthodox Jewish presence.
The climate in Woodmere experiences both extremes. There are cold wet winters and warm moderately dry summers. The average highs and lows vary greatly between seasons. Woodmere’s location exposes it to severe weather events. It has faced hurricanes like Gloria Irene and Sandy. The hamlet has also been hit by tornadoes. This happened three times in 1985 1998 and 2021. Despite these challenges Woodmere thrives.
Woodmere offers convenient transportation. The Long Island Rail Road Far Rockaway Branch serves the area via the Woodmere station. Nassau Inter County Express bus routes n31 and n32 provide additional transport links. The Woodmere Volunteer Fire Department protects the community. It provides fire rescue and advanced life support services. Approximately 75 volunteer members serve Woodmere.
Woodmere has produced notable figures. These range from authors and artists to business leaders and athletes. David A Adler author of the Cam Jansen series lived in Woodmere. So did Donatella Arpaia a well-known restaurateur. Other notable residents include Roger Berlind a successful theatrical producer Stan Lee a comic book legend and Donna Karan a renowned fashion designer. Woodmere’s contributions extend beyond its borders. It has shaped the lives and careers of many prominent individuals. This showcases its importance on a broader level.
