Isn’t it astonishing how the largest hockey arena in the world stands right here? Today we explore the SKA Arena. This arena is not just a building. It embodies the spirit of Saint Petersburg’s sporting ambition. Opened in December 2023 the SKA Arena quickly became a landmark. It is located on Yu Gagarina Avenue.
Before this arena stood here, the Saint Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex existed. Proposals emerged in 2017 to transform the site into a new home for the SKA St. Petersburg hockey team. Discussions considered reconstruction and complete demolition. Ultimately, the decision favored building a new ice arena. It had to be the largest in the world.
The construction of the SKA Arena wasn’t without challenges. During demolition in January 2020 the roof collapsed. A worker tragically died. Despite this setback, construction pressed on. By April 2021, a permit was issued for the arena’s construction.
The architectural design is striking. The Austrian bureau Coop Himmelb(l)au won an international competition. Their concept drew inspiration from the Monument to the Third International. SKA Arena’s primary tenant is SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League. The arena boasts a seating capacity of 21542 for ice hockey games. This surpasses the Bell Centre in Montreal. It makes it the largest hockey arena globally.
SKA Arena was initially planned to host the 2023 IIHF World Championship. However, the IIHF stripped Russia of hosting rights in April 2022. This was due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Despite these changes, the SKA Arena has hosted significant events. The 2023 KHL All Star Game festivities took place here. Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko visited the arena in January 2024. SKA St. Petersburg played its first game here in February 2024. They defeated HC Sochi 8-1. Sergey Tolchinsky scored the first goal.
