Mirador Asta Bandera sits atop Cerro del Obispado. The name comes from the Obispado building constructed nearby in the late 18th century. At 775 meters above sea level the viewpoint offers a circular esplanade. It measures 40 meters in diameter. In the center stands a monumental flag.
Construction of the flag began in 2003. It was inaugurated on February 24, 2005. This celebrated Mexico’s Flag Day. The flagpole weighs 120 tons. It measures 100 meters high. The flag itself is 50 by 30 meters. It weighs 250 kilograms.
The area is equipped with benches. There is a small parking area primarily for disabled people. Three French-style gardens add to the beauty. You can also find drinking fountains and restrooms here. The main path to the summit is wide and well-lit. Cars are allowed but the main parking lot is at the park’s entrance.
From the Mirador Asta Bandera you can see many dazzling sites. Admire the Viaducto de la Unidad bridge also known as the atirantado bridge. Look southwest to the Cañón de la Huasteca. To the north view the Cervecería Cuauhtémoc and the UANL.
Cerro de la Silla the Tecnológico de Monterrey and the city center are also visible. To the southwest lies the Sierra Madre Oriental. This location is attractive to tourists and locals alike.
Several important national holidays are celebrated here. These include Flag Day on February 24. Independence Day on September 16 and Mexican Army Day on February 19.
