In 1715 a convent dedicated to the Holy Family was founded. It was a conservatorio for young women. This is the Sacra Famiglia in Palermo. The Cappuccino Angelo del Monte and Carlo Palminteri established it near the Jesuit Noviziate. The actual monastery was built later in 1735. The Archbishop José Alfonso Meléndez presided over its solemn consecration in 1750. The Sacra Famiglia wasn’t just a convent. It was also a place of refuge. Many noble ladies chose to be buried there. They wore the habit of the Cappuccinelle. Their final resting place was the crypt. The crypt is a network of corridors and burial chambers. Unfortunately much of it was destroyed during renovations. A small statue of the baby Jesus is kept in the parlor. It’s attributed to Bagnasco. During wartime it was often turned to face the wall. This was done until enough alms were gathered to sustain the Clarisse nuns. The baby Jesus’s clothing was changed based on need. This charming detail reveals a poignant blend of faith and survival. The Sacra Famiglia stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and the quiet strength of women. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of Palermo. A place where history breathes. A quiet corner holding centuries of stories. The Sacra Famiglia’s legacy continues to echo through the heart of Palermo. It’s a place of peace and remembrance. It’s a hidden gem. A silent witness to the city’s rich past. Remember the Sacra Famiglia. Remember its story.
