Built in 1911-1912 the Hotel Handelshof stands proudly before us. Its imposing presence speaks of a rich history. A history interwoven with the fabric of Essen itself. This isn’t just a hotel. It’s a testament to Essen’s evolution from industrial powerhouse to modern metropolis.

The Hotel Handelshof wasn’t always a hotel. The site once housed the Hotel Zum Adler. A building that was eventually demolished to make way for the grand Handelshof. Imagine the bustling activity surrounding the original building. A hub for trade and commerce. The name itself Handelshof means “trade court” a fitting moniker for its location in Essen’s thriving city center.

The architects Carl Moritz and Werner Stahl designed this magnificent building. Their vision created a space where commerce and hospitality could coexist. The Handelshof housed not only hotel rooms but also shops and even a cinema. It was the grandest office building in the industrial district. A beacon for business and leisure.

The hotel opened its doors in 1913. Hermann Ruchmann was the initial owner. His family including his son the famous actor Heinz Ruchmann were initially involved in the business. But the family’s tenure was short-lived. A change in ownership occurred in 1913 due to the illness of Frau Ruchmann. Otto Blau a hotelier took over.

Throughout its history the Hotel Handelshof witnessed significant events. The Ruhrkampf occupation of 1923 was a dramatic chapter. A fire in 1929 caused damage. The World War II bombings left their mark. The hotel was damaged significantly but rebuilt.

In 1952 the Hotel Handelshof reopened with 360 beds. The building underwent several renovations. In 1985 it received landmark status for its architectural significance. For many years the Moevenpick hotel group managed the Handelshof. The name remained unchanged though ownership changed. A fire in 1988 led to a large evacuation. In 2015 the Moevenpick hotel group’s lease ended. The Novum Hotel Group took over.

Today the Novum Select Hotel Handelshof stands as a testament to resilience. It’s a modern hotel retaining its historic charm. The building continues to serve as a vital part of Essen’s bustling city center. Its history is a microcosm of Essen’s journey. A journey from industrial might to cultural vibrancy. The Hotel Handelshof a silent observer of that journey stands ready to welcome you. Its walls whisper tales of the past. Tales waiting to be discovered by you.
