Hidden within the tranquil Seyssel Park stands the Gogg̈inger Römerturm. It’s not a Roman tower, despite its name. This curious structure invites us to unravel its secrets. The Gogg̈inger Römerturm whispers tales of bygone eras. It stands on ancient foundations, possibly dating back to Roman times. Local lore speaks of it as a fortified tower. Eight brave defenders supposedly held it during a medieval city war. Their valiant stand is immortalized in Göggingen’s coat of arms, featuring a tower and eight swords. Another story suggests the foundations belonged to a water tower. The current pavilion, built in the Biedermeier period, replaced whatever stood there before. The Gogg̈inger Römerturm’s magical architecture blends various styles. It has a domed cellar, recessed columns on the ground floor, and an arcaded upper level topped with a conical roof. It’s a unique architectural gem nestled within the park. The park itself once extended to the Kurhaus area. In the 20th century, the Gogg̈inger Römerturm housed the Tycho Brahe Museum. This museum commemorates the Danish astronomer’s year in Augsburg (1569-1570). Brahe, with the help of local patrons, built the Augsburg Quadrant here. This enormous 10-meter wooden instrument was one of the first precision astronomical tools of the modern era. It stood in the nearby castle park of Paul Hainzel, Augsburg’s mayor and a fellow astronomy enthusiast. The exact location remains a mystery, but it was likely near the Gogg̈inger Römerturm. The quadrant’s construction finished after Brahe left Augsburg. However, Hainzel continued to use it for celestial observations. Sadly, a storm destroyed it just four years later. A 1:5 scale model of this groundbreaking instrument, along with informative displays, is showcased within the Gogg̈inger Römerturm. The tower’s rich history, from possible Roman origins to its role in astronomy, makes it a fascinating stop. The Gogg̈inger Römerturm is more than just a picturesque pavilion. It’s a time capsule, preserving stories of battles, scientific discovery, and architectural evolution.
