Marvelous South 24 Parganas isn’t it? Imagine a land shaped by mighty rivers and the restless Bay of Bengal. That’s South 24 Parganas. This sprawling district is West Bengal’s largest. It’s also India’s sixth most populous. One side boasts Kolkata’s urban sprawl. The other showcases remote Sundarbans villages.

South 24 Parganas has a rich history. Its story begins with Raja Bikramaditya and Maharaja Pratapaditya. Their capital was first at Dhumghat. It later moved to Ishwaripur. Pratapaditya boldly declared South Bengal’s independence from the Mughal Empire. His father Shrihari an influential officer under Daud Khan Karrani cleverly escaped with the royal treasure when Daud’s kingdom fell.

Pratapaditya inherited his father’s kingdom in 1574. He skillfully ruled over vast territories. These included parts of present-day Jessore Khulna and Barisal districts. He initially built his capital at Dhumghat. This was a strategic location at the confluence of the Jamuna and Ichhamati rivers. But the Mughals weren’t to be outdone. Pratapaditya’s defiance led to a major military campaign against him.

The battles were fierce. Pratapaditya and his son Udayaditya fought bravely. They constructed strong forts using natural barriers. They even employed expert officers and formidable fleets of war-boats. But the Mughal forces were relentless. After several intense battles Pratapaditya was eventually captured and imprisoned in Dhaka. He eventually died while being transported to Delhi. He died in prison in Benares.

Today South 24 Parganas thrives. It’s divided into five subdivisions Alipore Sadar Baruipur Canning Diamond Harbour and Kakdwip. Alipore serves as the district headquarters. There are numerous police stations community development blocks municipalities and gram panchayats. Many census towns dot the landscape. The district’s administrative structure is complex yet well-organized.

Beyond the administration the area is fascinating. The Sundarbans a vast mangrove forest is a major attraction. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s home to the magnificent Royal Bengal tiger. The Sundarbans National Park protects this incredible ecosystem.
