Ever wonder how a Conservative synagogue transforms into a vibrant Chabad center? Kew Gardens Jewish Center Anshe Sholom has a story of revival. It stands as a testament to community and faith.
Once a cornerstone of Conservative Judaism in Queens, Kew Gardens Jewish Center Anshe Sholom faced dwindling membership. Friday night services became a distant memory. The beautiful 7500 sq foot building built in 1970 risked closure. Its stained glass windows reflected fading hopes.
Then came a unique proposal. The synagogue approached Chabad with a plan. They agreed to change their constitution to adhere to halakhah. However, board members retained financial oversight. It was an innovative arrangement.
Mr. Steven Sobelsohn was the Executive Director of the synagogue. He said they worked for many months. Jerry Gaeta the President approached Rabbi Mordechai Z. Hecht. Rabbi Hecht directed Chabad of Forest Hills. After months of meetings, they reached an agreement.
The institutional name changed. The clergy was replaced. Services were modified to align with Orthodox tradition. Rabbi Hecht removed old Torah scrolls for restoration. The synagogue became Anshe Sholom Chabad.
Rabbi Hecht spoke enthusiastically. He said they could not have built a more suitable building. The sanctuary seats 300. The social hall holds 175. Five classrooms and a commercial kitchen stand ready. The Beit Midrash became the Gutnick Jewish Library.
Sobelsohn worried about the synagogue’s core group. Some members left because of the ritual changes. However, the core group remained steadfast. They invested time in making it work.
Since the change, Kew Gardens Jewish Center Anshe Sholom has experienced a revival. Activity increased dramatically. Reservations for the Passover Seder poured in. Classes were set up. Excitement filled the air.
Rabbi Hecht is also a chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserves. He follows in the footsteps of his grandfather Rabbi Shneur Chaim Hakohen Gutnick. Gutnick served as a chaplain in the Australian Defence Force.
