Approaching the intersection of Commonwealth and Brighton Avenues, you’ll notice a peculiar sculpture. It’s the Allston Directional, a dynamic piece of public art marking the gateway to Allston. This isn’t just any sculpture. It’s a functional piece of art. It was commissioned by the residents of Allston themselves. They wanted a landmark that both defined their neighborhood and added to its unique character. Out of sixty competing artists, Peter Brooks’ design was chosen. His Allston Directional was erected in 2005. The sculpture takes inspiration from the familiar highway traffic sign. Six oblong blue panels, each resembling a traffic sign of varying size, are mounted on a tall pole. These panels aren’t fixed. They rotate freely on their vertical axis. On a windy day, the Allston Directional transforms into a kinetic spectacle. The panels whirl and spin. They create a mesmerizing dance of minimalist art in motion. It is a constant reminder of Allston’s dynamic spirit.
