Saint John Catholic Church

“A church family.” These words, spoken back in 1958, echo the heart of Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church in Houston. Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church started as an extension of Our Lady of Sorrows. The community decided to build their own space, their own spiritual home. Fast forward sixty years, and Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church thrives with around 800 parishioners from 300 families. Many travel from across Houston to attend the weekend Masses, one in English and four in Spanish, a testament to the vibrant community here. Father Edwin Coreas has been the pastor at Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church for over 17 years. He’s the third pastor to guide this flock. He often hears parishioners describe Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church as a place of peace, a true “family of Christ.” The sense of belonging isn’t accidental. Father Coreas encourages everyone to view the church as their own, believing that ownership fosters care. This is evident in the warm greetings at the door before each Mass, especially for newcomers or “pilgrims,” as Father Coreas affectionately calls them. Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church isn’t just about Sunday service. There’s a growing focus on social activities. The parish is exploring everything from sports programs for all ages to Zumba classes and even piñata games. The goal is simple: to foster deeper connections within the community and strengthen the bond with God. Father Coreas himself plans to be the goalie in a parish soccer tournament, leading by example and showing his commitment beyond the pulpit. The spiritual life at Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church is rich. Weekly Bible study, a two-month scripture prayer course, and monthly all-night Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament provide opportunities for deeper connection with faith. Devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is strong. Each week, a different family takes home an image of Our Lady of St. John, creating a home altar and praying the Rosary daily. Father Coreas is also exploring new prayer service formats. He envisions smaller, more relaxed gatherings where parishioners can share their personal reflections on scripture, creating a more interactive experience. Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church is a community built on love. It’s a place where faith is lived, shared, and celebrated. It’s a place where everyone is welcome to join the journey.
