Imagine Ludwig Richard Conradi standing right where we are today. It is June 10, 1893. He is filled with hope as he establishes the Adventgemeinde Harburg.
The Adventgemeinde Harburg has a rich history spanning over 125 years. This church has been a beacon of faith and community in Hamburg. It started with just 23 members. Their initial meeting place was quite humble. It was a former horse stable transformed into a chapel. This stable belonged to the postal service on Krummholzberg.
Early meeting places shifted over time. By 1903, the congregation gathered at Außermühlenweg. Then in 1912, they moved to Rathausstraße. Within six years the church grew significantly. From 1908 to 1914, membership rose to 84. World War I brought challenges. The church found refuge in a backyard workshop on Lindenstraße 92 now Julius-Ludowieg-Straße. This workshop was converted into a place of worship.
In 1944 disaster struck. A bomb destroyed the meeting space. The Adventgemeinde Harburg was left without a home. Until 1946, members met in the apartment of the Hoffmann family on Berlepschweg. Later they were guests at the Elim-Gemeinde. For a short time, they also met at the Baptistengemeinde in Wilhelmsburg. The youth room of the Baptistengemeinde on Maretstraße became their temporary sanctuary.
The growing congregation needed a permanent place. In 1949, plans began for a new chapel. A member offered a plot of land on Bremer Straße. However the St. Johannis-Kirche opposed the construction. As a result, permission was denied.
Then Geschwister Meier offered land. It was located on Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Straße now Denickestraße. In early September 1952 volunteers started preparing the site. It was a rubble-filled lot. They transformed it into a construction site. On December 12, 1953, the Haus der Adventhoffnung was inaugurated. It has been the church’s home ever since. The podium bore the inscription: Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. This reflects the church’s mission. It highlights the anticipation of Christ’s return.
Over the years the Adventgemeinde Harburg flourished. There was a growing need for space. Activities for children and youth expanded. In 1979 the lower rooms were renovated. These rooms had previously been used as an apartment. They also served as storage space.
Generous donations funded the extensive renovations. These modernizations were carried out by volunteers. They were under the expert guidance of Bruder Grebe. Emil Maier-F, an artist and member, designed the worship space. It incorporated Christian symbols. In June 1982, the renovated church was dedicated. It became a venue for public lectures, cooking classes, and more. Other events included children’s Bible weeks, Pathfinder activities, and concerts. These activities fostered unity. They provided strength for daily life.
German reunification led to meaningful encounters. There were meetings between members from Harburg and East German churches. Numerous aid efforts for Romania, Russia, and other Eastern European countries were organized. These efforts exemplified the church’s commitment to social engagement.
By the end of 1993, the congregation had grown to 187 baptized members. There was also a large youth and children’s group. The church focused on serving the community. They offered discussion groups, life skills seminars, and hobby gatherings. Health events and a soup kitchen met the needs of the vulnerable.
Renovations in 2016 brought further changes. The worship space was partially redesigned. The cross became a central symbol. It highlights Jesus as the Redeemer.
“With Jesus into freedom” is the church’s motto. It emphasizes following God’s path. It means prioritizing others and listening to what He has in store for us.
Today the Adventgemeinde Harburg continues its mission. It welcomes all. It offers programs for all ages and encourages musical expression. It remains a place where faith, community, and service come together. The Adventgemeinde Hamburg-Harburg has about 200 members. Music remains central. It unites every age group.
