Rising 29 meters above the Grugapark is the Grugaturm. It is more than just a tower. It is a symbol of Essen’s resilience and innovation.

This iconic structure we see before us was erected in 1928. Architect Paul Portten designed the Grugaturm in the Bauhaus style. Its steel skeleton frame quickly became a landmark. The Grugaturm was completed in only 19 days for the Große Ruhrländische Gartenbau-Ausstellung in 1929.

Initially, the Grugaturm served a dual purpose. It was an observation tower and a radio tower. Its innovative design featured lightweight Heraklith panels. A 30-square-meter viewing platform was accessible via a staircase of approximately 100 steps. From here, musical radio broadcasts were transmitted across the Grugapark. This was revolutionary as radio was not yet a common household amenity. Can you imagine the novelty of open-air broadcasts in those days?

But the Grugaturm’s story does not end there. The tower’s base housed film screenings. After 1930, these screenings included sound. Adding to the spectacle, moving illuminated lettering projected daily news onto the Grugaturm at night.

The Reichsgartenschau in 1938 brought significant changes. A second oval viewing platform was added. An elevator was installed. These additions gave the Grugaturm its present-day form. The Second World War brought destruction. The Grugaturm was carefully restored. In 1952, a stylized tulip was added. This tulip was designed by Essen artist Jo Pieper. It became the park’s logo and remains so today.

In 1983, Wolfgang Portten passionately advocated for the Grugaturm’s preservation. His father, Paul Portten, designed the tower. At that time, the Grugaturm was in poor condition. Demolition was considered.

The Grugaturm was listed as a protected building in 1986. It closed to the public in 1987 due to structural issues. Restoration began in 2000 using sponsorships. Sadly, it is currently not usable as a viewing tower and remains closed. Experts are assessing damage to its steel framework. Corrosion protection and downpipes require repair.

Despite these challenges, the Grugaturm remains a testament to Essen’s history. It is the only remaining monument from the Grugapark’s early days. So, as we stand here, remember the Grugaturm. It represents architectural innovation and cultural significance. It embodies the spirit of Essen itself.
