The Maria Cebotari Plaque marks the building where she resided with her husband, actor Gustav Diessl, from 1938 to 1945. Maria Cebotari, born in Chișinău, Moldova in 1910, graced the stage of the Berlin State Opera. She captivated audiences with her performances of Mozart and Strauss. Her talent extended beyond opera. She starred in eight films, sharing the screen with prominent actors of her time. Cebotari’s captivating voice earned her the title of “Nightingale of Bessarabia.” She even received the prestigious Kammersängerin title, a testament to her artistic prowess. This recognition came at the young age of 24. However, her association with Nazi Germany led to her being labeled the “prima donna of the Reich.” Despite this label, a story reveals her defiance. Legend has it she once struck Joseph Goebbels with a bouquet of flowers, meant for her. This bold act showcased her courage against the regime. The Maria Cebotari Plaque stands as a tribute to her captivating voice and resilient spirit. Her untimely death in 1949, at just 38, cut short a brilliant career. Her legacy continues to inspire.
