Hidden between Erfurt and Gotha lies Bienstädt. It’s a small village nestled in the Fahnersche Höhen. Bienstädt boasts a unique landmark, the Bienstädt Warte. This stone tower watches over the village from a hilltop. It was originally called the Offhäuser Warte. Built in 1411, the Bienstädt Warte served a vital purpose. The city of Erfurt constructed a series of watchtowers. These towers protected their territory from raiders and invaders. They also helped settle border disputes. Imagine the watchmen, scanning the horizon. They were looking for signs of trouble. The Offhäuser Warte offered a commanding view of the surrounding area. From this vantage point, they could see approaching enemies or other dangers. The villagers of Bienstädt and nearby settlements played a role in the tower’s construction. They provided labor and resources. This tower was one of sixteen stone watchtowers surrounding Erfurt. Today, Bienstädt is a thriving village of about 660 residents. New housing developments in the 1990s brought growth and new families. The village is home to several businesses. These include a hotel with a restaurant and an agricultural operation for cattle farming. The Weisbach stream originates in Bienstädt and eventually flows into the Gera river. The Bienstädt Warte stands as a silent testament to the village’s rich history. It’s a reminder of a time when vigilance and defense were paramount.
