Pelham Jewish Center

Journey with me back to 1953. A small group of devoted founders established the Pelham Jewish Center above a storefront. They dreamt of a vibrant Jewish community in a town with few Jewish residents. Today, we stand before the Pelham Jewish Center, a testament to their vision and the enduring spirit of this community. The Pelham Jewish Center isn’t just a building. It’s a living embodiment of openness, intimacy, and authenticity. It welcomes Jews of all backgrounds, regardless of their origin, level of observance, or stage in their journey. It embraces interfaith families, making them an integral part of the synagogue’s vibrant tapestry. Here, intimacy thrives. Members find acceptance and connection in melodious services. They share life’s joys and sorrows, from shiva gatherings to lingering kiddushes. The rabbi knows each member personally, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Authenticity is paramount at the Pelham Jewish Center. Services are conducted in Hebrew, with transliterated siddurim available for those who need them. The Shabbat dress code is informal. There are no assigned seats or price tags on High Holiday honors. It’s a place where you can truly be yourself. The Pelham Jewish Center’s Learning Center is a cornerstone of this community. Its mission is to instill a love of God and Torah in children and families. The curriculum is designed to create well-rounded Jewish individuals committed to Torah study, worship, and acts of loving-kindness. From pre-k to high school, students learn Jewish rituals, participate in social action, and study Torah, Jewish history, Hebrew, and the concept of Klal Israel. The Pelham Jewish Center’s journey hasn’t always been easy. Fifty years after its founding, the congregation found themselves hosted by local churches while their building underwent renovations. This act of interfaith support speaks volumes about the Pelham Jewish Center’s place in the wider community. It highlights the bonds of friendship and mutual respect that have been carefully cultivated over the years. The Pelham Jewish Center stands as a beacon of Jewish life in Pelham.
