Across the street from the bustle of modern Montreal stands Maison Abner-Bagg. It’s a quiet sentinel of the city’s past. The Maison Abner-Bagg whispers tales of a bygone era. An era of top hats and bustling trade, of fortunes made and lost. This grey stone building at the corner of King and William Streets has seen much in its two centuries. It bears the name of its original owner, Abner Bagg. He was a merchant who arrived from Massachusetts as a child. He built this neoclassical-style home in 1821. Just a year later, he added a three-story warehouse. He had a shrewd eye for business, recognizing the potential of this then-developing area. This area, known as Ste. Anne, was just west of Montreal’s core. The city’s fortifications had recently been torn down. This opened the way for businesses like Abner’s to flourish in the suburbs. Abner Bagg was a hat importer and manufacturer. He clearly had ambition, but he also had a weakness for risk. He was involved in various ventures. He imported hats, traded timber, and even dabbled in steamboat shares. He bought and sold real estate. The Maison Abner-Bagg stands as a testament to his early successes. But success can be fleeting. The mid-1820s brought financial ruin for Abner. A commercial crisis swept through Canada, leaving him unable to repay his debts. He was forced to sell his beloved house around 1835, his other properties following soon after. The Maison Abner-Bagg lived on. It was then owned by grocer Orlin Bostwick and later by brewer William Dow. The building even served as an inn for British Army officers. Imagine the stories these walls could tell. In 1991, the building was purchased and restored to its former glory. Today, the Maison Abner-Bagg houses offices. It serves as a reminder of a time when homes and workplaces stood side by side. It’s a symbol of Montreal’s growth and transformation from a fortified city to a bustling metropolis.
