Daskalakis Athletic Centre

What was once known as the “New Gym” is now a beacon of Drexel University pride. The Daskalakis Athletic Centre, or DAC as it’s fondly called, has been a part of Drexel’s history since 1975. Initially, the Daskalakis Athletic Centre was called the Physical Education Center. It boasted grandstands with a capacity of 1,800, expandable to 2,700 with temporary bleachers. However, the Daskalakis Athletic Centre we see today is a result of vision and generosity. In 2000, a generous donation from John Daskalakis, a Drexel alum and telecommunications executive, led to the center being renamed in his honor. Daskalakis, a former lacrosse player for Drexel, made his mark on the university in a truly unforgettable way. The Daskalakis Athletic Centre isn’t just about a name change. It’s a hub of excitement, hosting Drexel Dragons basketball and wrestling events. Imagine the roar of the crowd as you witness thrilling victories within these walls. In 2005, the basketball court was dedicated to former men’s basketball coach Sam Cozen, becoming Cozen Court. The Daskalakis Athletic Centre has seen its share of renovations and expansions, with the most recent taking place in 2022. These upgrades ensure that the center remains a top-notch facility for athletes and spectators alike. From its humble beginnings as the “New Gym” to its current standing as the Daskalakis Athletic Centre, this building represents Drexel’s commitment to athletic excellence and student life.
