Did you know that Hamburg’s largest public park was once a vision? A vision of Ferdinand Tutenberg. Altonaer Volkspark wasn’t always the green expanse we see today. It started in 1914. About 1000 workers began its construction. The First World War interrupted their progress. Work resumed in 1918. The park finally opened in 1920. It offered much-needed respite. Public spaces were scarce in Hamburg then.

Altonaer Volkspark is more than just green space. It’s a testament to a concept. Tutenberg designed it not for artistic effect but for people. The park prioritizes nature. It includes vast untouched areas. Formal park designs were not his focus. Instead he created areas for play sport recreation and education. Think of it: a space for everyone to connect with nature.

This wasn’t just a quick project. Altonaer Volkspark’s development happened in four phases. Parts were opened in 1918 1920 and 1928. The park even housed a swimming pool once. A groundwater-fed pool opened in 1927. It also had a paddling lake. Both are gone now. The Bornmoorwiese meadow also disappeared. It was converted into a parking lot. The park is home to more than just greenery. The Bahrenfeld harness racetrack is within its borders. You’ll find the Altona Dahlia Garden there as well. A remarkable collection of over 40000 flowers.

The core of Altonaer Volkspark is quite special. It’s been under monument protection since 2002. It’s a living historical site. Stroll through its paths and imagine the workers. Picture them shaping the park nearly a century ago. They were mostly unemployed workers. They were creating a place of community and renewal.

Today Altonaer Volkspark is surrounded by other developments. The Volksparkstadion is nearby. The Barclaycard Arena and Volksbank Arena are also close by. These additions changed the park’s landscape. The area around the stadium is now privately owned. Despite these changes Altonaer Volkspark remains a haven. A green lung in a busy city. It continues to offer space for relaxation recreation and reflection. It is a testament to the foresight of its creator. A park that prioritizes the people and nature. Come discover its beauty.
