Tucked away on a street aptly named Ethiopia Street, lies The Ethiopian Church, a testament to a faith that has spanned millennia. This isn’t just any church. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has had an uninterrupted presence in Jerusalem since the 4th century. Imagine a lineage of faith, unbroken, stretching back to the very conversion of Ethiopia to Christianity. The Ethiopian Church, also known as Debra Gannet, carries a unique history. It represents a distinct branch of Christianity, diverging from the main body after the Council of Chalcedon in 451 CE. This theological divergence, centered around the nature of Christ, solidified the Ethiopian Orthodox Church as one of the oldest schismatic Christian sects still in existence. For centuries, The Ethiopian Church community held a modest presence atop the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Then, in 1888, Emperor Yohannes IV bestowed a generous grant. This allowed the acquisition of land outside the Old City walls on what is now Hanevi’im Street, the current location of The Ethiopian Church. The architecture of The Ethiopian Church is strikingly different from Western churches. Instead of the traditional long nave leading to an altar, Debra Gannet is circular. The altar sits at the very center, with the structure radiating outwards. The circular design evokes a sense of unity and community. Within the monastery walls, monks and nuns maintain their devout lives, adding to the serene atmosphere of The Ethiopian Church. While open to visitors, it remains a place of quiet contemplation. Before entering The Ethiopian Church, remember to remove your shoes, a sign of respect in Ethiopian custom. Inside, you can feel the weight of history.
