Camp Pendleton Mainside got its start as Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores. In 1841 the Pico brothers became its first private owners. Later John Forster developed it into a thriving cattle ranch.

In the early 1940s the U.S. Marine Corps sought land for a large training base. Rancho Santa Margarita y Los Flores was chosen. In 1942 it became the largest Marine Corps base in the country.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the base on September 25 1942. It was named after Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton. He had long advocated for a West Coast training base.

During World War II Camp Pendleton Mainside served as a vital training ground. It housed landing craft schools amphibious tractor schools and more. It also became a discharge point for returning soldiers.

After the war expansions continued. $20 million helped upgrade facilities during the Korean War. Camp Pendleton trained troops for both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Approximately 200000 Marines passed through on their way to the Far East.

In 1975 Camp Pendleton provided accommodations for Vietnamese evacuees. Over 50000 refugees arrived in the largest humanitarian airlift in history.

Camp Pendleton Mainside has grown to include more than 2626 buildings and 500 miles of roads. The original ranch house stands as a National Historic Site. It preserves the heritage of the Marine Corps.

Today Camp Pendleton Mainside continues to serve. It is home to the I Marine Expeditionary Force. It provides year-round training for Marines and other U.S. military branches.

The base’s diverse geography includes 17 miles of coastline. The Mainside Complex is at the southeastern end. The northern interior serves as an impact area.

Camp Pendleton’s population reflects its military community. According to the 2020 census it had 9683 residents. It once was known as Camp Pendleton North.

Camp Pendleton Mainside also supports local education. It falls within several school districts including Fallbrook Union and Oceanside Unified.

Camp Pendleton’s ecology is carefully managed. It provides habitats for several species. These include the Western Snowy Plover and the Pacific Pocket Mouse.
