“Hechelreppschter” they call you, a name shrouded in mystery. This is Großrettbach a village with a history stretching back over 1225 years. Großrettbach sits nestled in the fertile lands of Thuringia. We are standing in a place that has seen centuries of change.

Großrettbach was first mentioned as Retbeche in the late 8th century. Imagine Karl the Great gifting this land to the Hersfeld Monastery. This very ground felt the footsteps of people from that era. Think about this fact as we explore this old village.

The Thirty Years’ War devastated Großrettbach. It was left uninhabited for years. But Großrettbach recovered showing the resilience of its people. The village became part of different duchies before becoming part of Thuringia in 1920.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the Dorfkirche St. Gotthard. The church is the heart of Großrettbach. The original church was torn down in 1821. The new church was consecrated the same year at a cost of 3617 Reichstaler. Just to the northwest of the church stands the old Pfarrhaus built in 1717.

Do you notice the building renovated in 2011? That is Großrettbach’s community center. This building built in 1888 has been the site of countless gatherings. Here friendships were forged. Memories were made.

Let’s walk towards the Gramborn-Brunnen at the southwestern edge of Großrettbach. The spring has been known for centuries. The Gramborn-Brunnen was vital for the villagers. It provided water even in dry years. Except for one year that is. In the very dry year 1893, the spring dried up. The spring has very hard water.

Look closely at the bus stop. You will see the Buch-Haltestelle. Since 2019, the old bus stop has been a public bookcase. Anyone can take or leave books. The bookcase offers a wide range of literature.

The Rettbach flows near Großrettbach. The Rettbach rises in Kleinrettbach. It flows into the Rot in Cobstädt. The Rot then joins the Apfelstädt in Wandersleben.

Großrettbach may be small, but it has several active clubs. The Rassegeflügelzuchtverein is a poultry club. The Dorfverein works to improve the village. The Fußballclub promotes soccer.

Großrettbach has seen war and peace. It has seen famine and abundance. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community. Großrettbach remains a vibrant village. Even if the reason for their nickname “Hechelreppschter” remains a mystery.
