The Fire Tower

In 1890, a beacon of safety rose above Bucharest’s skyline: The Fire Tower. The Foișorul de Foc, as it’s known in Romanian, stands tall between Obor, Calea Moșilor, and Nerva-Traian. Originally intended to serve a dual purpose, The Fire Tower was designed by George Mandrea, Bucharest’s chief architect, as both a watchtower and a water tower. However, the local water company, Uzina de Apă Grozăvești, lacked the powerful pumps needed to fill the 42-meter structure. So, The Fire Tower solely became the vigilant eye of Bucharest’s firefighters. Imagine the firemen, perched high atop The Fire Tower, scanning the city for the first signs of smoke. They kept watch over a city primarily built of wood, where fires were a constant threat. For decades, The Fire Tower served as a vital defense against devastating blazes. But by 1935, the city landscape had changed. Taller buildings began to dwarf The Fire Tower, obstructing its view. The telephone, a new marvel of communication, made the watchtower’s signals less crucial. The Fire Tower’s era as a lookout point ended. It wasn’t forgotten, though. In 1963, The Fire Tower was transformed into the Firefighters’ Museum. Following renovations starting in 2021, the museum reopened in September 2024, allowing visitors to delve into the history of firefighting in Bucharest. Today, The Fire Tower stands not only as a reminder of Bucharest’s past but also as a testament to the bravery and dedication of its firefighters.
