From the Bronze Age whispers to the echoes of the Roman Empire, the Castro de Alvarelhos has witnessed centuries of history. Here on the slopes of Santa Eufémia Mountain, overlooking the fertile valley, the Castro de Alvarelhos stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of human settlement. Classified as a National Monument since 1910, this archaeological site invites you to journey through time. The earliest inhabitants, dating back to the late Bronze Age, left behind polished ceramics, stone axes, and flint blades. These artifacts offer glimpses into their agro-pastoral lives, shaped by the land’s bounty. The Castro de Alvarelhos then became known as “Castellvm Madiae,” home to the Madiaequises tribe during the Iron Age, from the 2nd century BC. The presence of a Roman road, the Cale-Bracara, further underscores the site’s strategic importance. This road, evidenced by a milestone discovered nearby, connected Cale (Porto) and Bracara Augusta (Braga), weaving the Castro de Alvarelhos into the fabric of the Roman Empire. The Roman influence is deeply etched into the Castro de Alvarelhos’s story. This era, lasting until the empire’s decline, shaped the site’s layout and left a lasting mark. By the mid-5th century AD, perhaps following a devastating fire, the population dwindled or retreated to areas yet to be unearthed. The once-thriving urban center was abandoned. Later, a small fortification arose on Monte de S. Marçal between the 9th and 12th centuries. A church and cemetery emerged between the 12th and 16th centuries, adding another layer to the Castro de Alvarelhos’s rich tapestry. Today, as you explore the interpretive trail, imagine the lives lived here, the echoes of ancient languages, and the rise and fall of civilizations. The Castro de Alvarelhos whispers stories of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring presence of the past in the present.
