Intermediate School 318 houses a chess program so renowned, it’s been hailed as the best middle-school program in the entire United States. In 2012, the Intermediate School 318 chess team achieved the unthinkable. They became the first middle school ever to win the U.S. Chess Federation’s national high school championship, a competition designed for students years older than them. They toppled high school giants like Stuyvesant and Edward R. Murrow, proving that brilliance isn’t defined by age or socioeconomic status. The team’s victories weren’t simply about winning trophies.
