Ever wondered what secrets lie within those ornate verandahs? The Empire Hotel in Brisbane stands before you a testament to history. Built in 1888 by Smith and Ball this three-storey brick beauty replaced an earlier Empire Hotel dating back to 1865. Designed by the renowned architect Richard Gailey the Empire Hotel quickly became a hub of activity in Fortitude Valley. It boasted over sixty rooms a testament to its popularity and the burgeoning development of the area.

Imagine Walter McFarlane the first publican polishing the bar top. Picture the lively chatter the clinking glasses the laughter echoing through those now refurbished rooms. The hotel’s prominence was not just about its size or location it was about the era it represented. Its construction in the late 1880s reflected the confidence and growth of Fortitude Valley.

The Empire Hotel wasn’t immune to change. In 1925 Richard Gailey Junior oversaw renovations. Further changes came in 1937 with Hall and Phillips transforming part of the Ann Street section into the Empire Apartments. Sadly these apartments were demolished in the 1960s. Yet even with the passage of time and alterations much of the original Empire Hotel’s structure and design remain. The original staircase with its metal balustrade and tiled walls is a survivor. Ornate plaster work art deco ceilings and coloured leadlight windows all whisper tales of the past.

The hotel’s significance extends beyond its architectural charm. It’s a vital piece of Brisbane’s history a landmark that has witnessed the city’s evolution. It’s a reminder of Fortitude Valley’s growth its vibrant past and its enduring spirit. The Empire Hotel a significant part of Queensland’s heritage listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992 stands as a symbol of resilience and a window into Brisbane’s captivating past. Take a moment to appreciate its majesty. It is a place where history and present day meet a true gem in Fortitude Valley.
