Founded in 1831 as West Liberty Dayton’s story is one of resilience and transformation. Originally part of Liberty it sat across the Trinity River. Isaiah Cates Day an early settler acquired land and played a key role in Dayton’s development. The Texas-New Orleans Railroad arrived in 1860. Train conductors called the stop Days Station Days Town or Dayton Station. This informal name eventually became official around 1885. Dayton thrived with sawmills and fertile farmland. By 1902 Dayton boasted several stores a blacksmith shop and schools. In 1911 it incorporated as a town. The American Rice Growers Co-op Rice Mill a landmark structure operated from the 1940s until 2017. Now abandoned it stands as a testament to Dayton’s agricultural past. Cotton rice and cattle farming shaped Dayton’s early economy. After the Civil War many freed slaves settled in the area. Their descendants today make up about 15% of the population. Today Dayton is a city with a population of almost 9000. It’s a key transportation hub with US Highway 90 and two major railroads. The Union Pacific and BNSF railroads pass through the town. The city serves as a service center for Union Pacific. Near Dayton are three Texas State Correctional facilities. The city has a council-manager government. The mayor is Martin Mudd. The current city manager is Kimberly Judge. The Dayton Economic Development Corporation DEDC supports local businesses.
