Do you know why this cemetery is also called La Pătrunjel? We stand before Cimitirul Reînvierea a place with a story as rich and layered as the earth beneath our feet. It’s located in the Colentina area between Strada Mașina de Pâine Strada Reînvierii and Strada Oțetani. More than just a resting place it reflects Bucharest’s history.

For centuries burials happened near churches. Space became an issue. The need for dedicated cemeteries arose. This wasn’t solely for hygiene but also for space. In 1801 a cemetery opened near the Sf Vineri Church. Later another near Sf Vineri Nouă. The Russian-Turkish war of 1806-1812 led to a Russian military cemetery near Mănăstirea Spirei.

The removal of cemeteries from the city was a 19th-century concern. In 1809 Russian authorities asked that burials near churches cease. Protests followed. People feared grave robbing. The Divan eventually designated land outside the city for new cemeteries.

The project involved ten sites. Five for Orthodox Christians and five for other denominations. There were disagreements over locations. Armenians preferred Colentina and Belvedere. Land was allocated on moșia Floreasca moșia Dudești and moșia Văcărești.

One significant cemetery the Bellu Cemetery began development around 1855. It initially included Orthodox and Catholic sections. A chapel and mortuary were planned. Construction was delayed by the Crimean War. The cemetery opened in 1858.

Cimitirul Reînvierea also known as La Pătrunjel has a unique atmosphere. Its name comes from the fact that the wealthiest families bought plots in the central greener areas. The less fortunate had to settle for less desirable plots. This is evident in the style of monuments and the layout.

Some graves feature elaborate structures. Others are more modest. Many monuments bear the names and professions of the deceased. Some have moving inscriptions. The cemetery is a blend of the traditional and the contemporary. It continues to evolve reflecting changing tastes and beliefs.

Cimitirul Reînvierea stands as a testament to Bucharest’s evolution. It showcases the city’s history its people and their faith. It’s a place where stories of life and death intertwine. It is a site to reflect on the past and contemplate the future.
