Look at us, here, entering the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, right at the footsteps of some of the most fascinating animals in the world. This is more than just a zoo, it’s a journey back in time, a chance to see the creatures mentioned in the ancient stories that formed our history right in front of us. The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo is unique in so many ways. Founded in 1940, it was originally a small children’s zoo in downtown Jerusalem. But it quickly grew in size and significance, becoming a place of learning and conservation, the home of unique species and the symbol of the city’s cultural heritage. It is a living testament to the enduring stories and creatures of the Bible, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the region, featuring everything from agile gazelles and towering giraffes to magnificent lions and rare birds of prey. It’s interesting to know that, during its early days, many of the creatures at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, were actually brought to the institution by British soldiers, who, during the 1940s, had a presence in Jerusalem. Over the years, the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo moved to several locations around the city until settling in its current location in Malha in 1993. This sprawling green space houses more than 2,000 animals representing 300 different species. Here, animals live in open, spacious enclosures, mimicking their natural habitats and ensuring a more enriching life for them. Look closely, you’ll see no bars or cages. Moats, ditches, glass windows, and bridges separate the animals from us, visitors. The zoo is also deeply committed to conservation, participating in breeding programs to help endangered species, such as the Arabian Leopard. The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo is a place where history meets the present, offering a fascinating glimpse into the animal kingdom, and it serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving biodiversity and the stories of our past.
