Have you ever driven through Monterrey and noticed a large, imposing bridge where Avenida Ruiz Cortines meets Bernardo Reyes? That’s Puente Rube, a critical artery of the city, and it has a fascinating story. This bridge, known locally as “Rube,” stands as a testament to Monterrey’s growth and evolution. Back in the 1970s, as Monterrey’s population swelled and car ownership surged, the city’s road network was struggling to keep pace. Traffic jams became commonplace, leading to frustrations and delays. The solution? More bridges. And Puente Rube was one of the key bridges constructed by Governor Pedro Zorrilla in the 1970s to ease the traffic woes. He realized that a direct connection between Avenida Ruiz Cortines, a major thoroughfare heading west, and Bernardo Reyes to the east, leading to the city’s University and its gateway to Nuevo Laredo, was essential. But Puente Rube is more than just a bridge; it’s a symbol of Monterrey’s ingenuity and its enduring spirit. Its design was the subject of a public competition, and the winning design enabled a smooth turn from Ruiz Cortines onto Bernardo Reyes, heading east. Today, standing on Puente Rube, you can look back in time and imagine the city’s chaotic traffic days, where the bottleneck at this junction caused so much frustration. Thanks to a bridge that now carries thousands of vehicles daily, the journey is smoother, and the city’s pulse flows more freely. Now, let’s move on to our next stop.
