In 1984, a unique gallery emerged in Berlin-Neukölln. Galerie Olga Benario opened its doors, named after the German-Brazilian communist. This gallery isn’t your typical commercial art space. It’s an autonomous project fueled by private donations and visitor contributions. Galerie Olga Benario’s mission goes beyond showcasing art. It aims to inform visitors about historical and current events. The gallery strives to connect historical themes with contemporary issues. The exhibitions at Galerie Olga Benario change every 6 to 8 weeks. They offer a dynamic platform for exploring various topics. The gallery also hosts events. These events provide opportunities for discussion and political engagement. The gallery was founded by the Vereinigung der Verfolgten des Naziregimes/Verband der Antifaschisten (VVN/VdA). Three criteria guided the naming process: honoring a woman, a connection to Neukölln, and celebrating an internationalist. The gallery originally focused on life and resistance during fascism. Many VVN/VdA members shared firsthand accounts. After a brief closure in 1991, Galerie Olga Benario reopened. It shared a space with Restaurant “Orlando” until 2001. Then it relocated to its current location on Richardstraße 104. This is near the Karl-Marx-Straße U-Bahn station. Galerie Olga Benario stands apart from mainstream galleries. It tackles political and social topics often overlooked by the media. This makes it a vibrant and essential part of Berlin’s cultural landscape.
