Beneath the Egapark lies the Denkmal Alter Friedhof. A poignant reminder of Erfurt’s Jewish history. This isn’t just a memorial it’s a testament to resilience. It’s a story etched in stone and sorrow.

In 1811 the first Jewish cemetery was established here. The community quickly outgrew it. A larger cemetery opened in 1878. The old cemetery remained. Jewish belief holds that the dead rest eternally undisturbed.

However peace was shattered. Antisemitism rose. In 1926 vandals desecrated the site. Ninety-five gravestones were destroyed. The horrors of Kristallnacht in 1938 brought further devastation. The city council voted to raze the cemetery. The Jewish community was forced to relinquish the land. In 1944 the remaining gravestones were removed.

The land changed hands again after World War II. The Jewish community regained ownership. But the city quickly repurposed it. Garages were built their foundations made from broken gravestones. This was deeply upsetting to the Jewish community. Even in 1995 a transformer station was approved.

A memorial stone was placed in 1996. Then a long process began to restore the site. The garages were demolished. The land was cleared. Recovered gravestones found their way back. The Denkmal Alter Friedhof was separated from the surrounding parkland.

Today this space stands as a memorial. It tells of destruction and perseverance. It shows the continuing struggle for remembrance. The Denkmal Alter Friedhof whispers stories of lives lost. It is a testament to a community’s enduring spirit. It is a place of reflection. It demands our attention and respect.
