Did you ever hear of a palace built for pure joy? Gartenpforte Schloss Molsdorf, also known as the “Thuringian Versailles,” whispers tales of delightful indulgence. This charming palace near Erfurt, Germany, embodies the spirit of “vive la joie” (long live happiness). It was the vision of Imperial Count Gustav Adolf von Gotter, a Prussian diplomat who embraced pleasure. He transformed this former water castle into a late-Baroque masterpiece between 1734 and 1748. Gartenpforte Schloss Molsdorf isn’t just a building. It’s a gateway to an era of lavish gardens and grand festivities. The north façade, with its watchtowers and stone bridge, hints at the fortified past. But step through the Gartenpforte, and you’ll be greeted by the elegance of the 18th-century Baroque style. The count spared no expense, commissioning renowned artists to adorn both the palace and the gardens. The south wing of Gartenpforte Schloss Molsdorf offers breathtaking views of the park, an oasis designed for romantic strolls. The grounds feature a lapidarium, a collection of restored sculptures that once graced the original Baroque gardens. Inside, the restored rooms showcase a mix of Baroque and Art Nouveau elements. A unique feature of Gartenpforte Schloss Molsdorf is the Castle Library’s erotica cabinet. This collection of 1672 volumes includes 18th and 19th-century graphics, offering a glimpse into the more private pursuits of the era. Sadly, the count’s extravagant lifestyle led him to sell the palace in 1748. The gardens were later redesigned in the English landscape style, and many original sculptures were sold. However, the remaining sculptures have been meticulously restored and are now displayed in the lapidarium. Today, Gartenpforte Schloss Molsdorf stands as a testament to a bygone era of elegance and joy. Its meticulously restored rooms and gardens invite visitors to step back in time and experience the count’s vision of “vive la joie.” The spirit of the count lives on, inviting us to savor the beauty and find our own moments of happiness within these historic walls.
