In 1944 this area witnessed a brutal episode. On August 9th 1200 people were arrested. Of those 120 were executed on the spot. The remaining prisoners were sent to Haidari camp. From there 600 were deported to German concentration camps. Very few survived the horrors they faced. The Block of Dourgouti became a martyr district of Athens. This is along with Kokkinia Nikaia Kallithea and Kaissariani.

The Nazis often terrorized neighborhoods near the Block of Dourgouti. Roadblocks were set up to trap and execute people. These neighborhoods were typically working-class areas known for partisan activity. The Block of Dourgouti is a somber place. It reminds visitors of the cost of war and occupation.

After the war the neighborhood around the Block of Dourgouti suffered. It was burned adding to the tragedy of the site. In 1954 the area saw a different kind of activity. Nikos Koundouros filmed his movie Magical City here capturing a snapshot of post-war Athens.
